Fantastic horizontal seaside landscape painting of one of Georgia's Port Brunswick where the artist Selma Fendig Shelander (1899-1992) was raised and is now buried. This style of heavy laid paint is called "Imposto", Italian for mixture, and results in a heavily textured impressionist aesthetic. The bright background and silhouetted structures tell us it is dawn or dusk, and like a pointillist piece, the image is clearer from a distance. Fendig-Shelander was a renowned artist had this piece framed in this modern but rustic style and then shown at a gallery in St. Simon's Island in 1963. Beautiful piece, excellent condition. Measures 19"H x 31"W and is lighter than it looks.
